The Nymphaea caerulae or blue lotus is a water lotus that boasts beautiful blue flowers. It is said that in ancient times, the Egyptians used the blue lotus as a medicine and as a ritual herb, due to its lightly intoxicating effects.

The principal effects that are obtained by using the blue lotus are a mild sedative effect, a nice warm sensation in your head, a dreamy feeling, as well as a mildly stimulating effect. The active compound of the blue lotus is the alcoloid named nuciferine. Nuciferine does not work as a hallucinogen but does have an anti-spasmodic effect. Blue lotus has also been reported to have a hypnotic effect, comparable to being on cannabis, codeine, or propoxyphene.
Blue lotus has also been shown to function as a sexual stimulant. According to some doctors, the flower has a Viagra-like effect. In order for the Blue Lotus to have an effect, you need about 3-5 flowers per person. You can eat it, smoke it, make a tea from it or let it soak in wine.
